Nick of Time Foundation is Holding EKG Youth Heart Screenings at Liberty High School – Wednesday, February 1, 2023 - Register Now!
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of sudden death in exercising “at-play” young people and is typically the result of an undiagnosed structural or electrical problem. Unlike a heart attack where the heart will continue to try pumping blood, SCA is the sudden onset of an abnormal and lethal heart rhythm that causes the heart to stop. SCA strikes without warning for a number of reasons including genetic factors and cardiac abnormalities, and can develop as an adolescent or young adult. SCA is more likely to occur during exercise or physical activity, placing athletes with undiagnosed heart conditions at greater risk. SCA can also occur from a direct blow to the chest by a firm projectile (baseball, softball, lacrosse ball, or hockey puck) or by chest contact from another player. The symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest? Sudden collapse, no pulse, no breathing, and loss of consciousness. A shock from a defibrillator is the only thing that can save a person in cardiac arrest. Integrated screening programs utilizing EKG (electrocardiogram) offer the only model proven to reliably identify children at risk for SCA, and the only model with evidence suggesting early detection can reduce the rate of SCA in young people.
The vision of Nick of Time Foundation is to increase awareness about sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and how it affects children and young adults with the goal of saving lives through SCA education and awareness, the formation of school and community emergency action plans that include CPR/AED training, EKG youth heart screenings, volunteer opportunities, and scientific research.
What happens during a screening?
The screening consists of: reviewing a health history questionnaire, taking blood pressure, an EKG screening that analyzes the electrical signals of the heart, “hands only” instruction in CPR and AED training, and a doctor consult and screening results review. An on-site echocardiogram is conducted in cases with a positive finding on history, physical exam, or EKG. Each screen is free and takes approximately 45 minutes. When will the screenings take place?
Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at Liberty High School Main Gym, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
